India Closer to Structure ‘World’s Biggest’ N-Plant
The largest nuclear power station in the world will be built in India with the assistance of the French energy company EDF, a project that has been stalled for years due to nuclear accidents and local opposition.

In western India’s Jaitapur, the business announced that it had submitted a legally binding offer to provide engineering studies and equipment for the construction of six third-generation EPR reactors.
When completed, the facility would produce 10 gigawatts (GW), or around 70 million homes’ worth of electricity. Although it will take 15 years to complete, the site should be able to start producing electricity before then.

EDF projects that the project will generate about 2,700 permanent jobs and over 25,000 temporary jobs in the local economy during the building period.

Risks from earthquakes and potential effects on local fishing have been identified as important issues. Yet, according to Xavier Ursat, head of EDF’s nuclear division, “geological conditions are good and entirely similar to what we find in a country such as France” at the site.
With nations like the US, France, Russia, and Japan, India already has various agreements for the exchange of nuclear technologies and experience.
