India has decided to temporarily withdraw the families of its diplomats from Bangladesh, citing security concerns as political tensions escalate ahead of the country’s general election scheduled for February 12.
An Indian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed on Wednesday that diplomats’ families and dependents are being pulled back due to mounting security risks. The official described the step as part of “internal readjustments” and did not specify when families might return. Indian media first reported the development earlier this week.
The decision comes as election campaigning begins on Thursday, a period often marked by protests and counter-protests across Bangladesh. Political unrest has also strained ties between India and Bangladesh, particularly after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India in 2024 following violent demonstrations.
In December, India summoned Bangladesh’s high commissioner to convey concerns over the worsening security environment, including threats directed at the Indian mission in Dhaka.
The foreign ministries of both countries have not immediately commented on the move. Observers say the withdrawal is a precautionary measure amid rising tensions and could have short-term implications for diplomatic operations.
