Instagram has officially tightened its hashtag rules, limiting users to five hashtags per post and reel. The change was confirmed by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri and is aimed at improving content discovery while cutting down on spam and misuse.

Instagram has experimented with hashtag limits in the past, sometimes allowing only three hashtags for certain users. The platform has now standardized the rule, enforcing a universal cap of five hashtags across all posts and reels.

Mosseri stressed that fewer, carefully selected hashtags perform better than long, generic lists. In an update shared on his advice channel, he said the focus should be on “quality over quantity.”

Why Instagram made the change

According to Instagram, excessive hashtag use has contributed to spam, scams, and cluttered captions. Long strings of unrelated or trending hashtags often made posts harder to read and diluted meaningful discovery.

The platform believes that limiting hashtags will encourage creators to be more intentional, improve user experience, and reduce abuse of the system.

Tips for using hashtags effectively

Instagram also shared guidance to help creators adapt to the new rule:

  • Choose hashtags that are directly relevant to your content
  • Use niche or topic-specific tags instead of broad ones
  • Avoid generic hashtags like #reels or #explore, which may not boost reach and can sometimes hurt performance

For creators, the five-hashtag limit pushes a more strategic approach to visibility. For users, it means cleaner captions and a more focused content feed.
