The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to resume on May 17 following a week-long suspension triggered by escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The suspension came amid the worst cross-border conflict in nearly 30 years, but after the announcement of a ceasefire and consultations with government and security agencies, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed the tournament will proceed.

A total of 17 matches remain in the tournament, including 12 group stage games. These matches will be held across six Indian cities: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. The revised schedule includes two double-headers, which are planned for Sundays, and the final will take place on June 3, 2025. The venues for the playoff matches will be announced later.

The decision to suspend the tournament was made last Friday after discussions with franchise owners and players. During the conflict, an IPL game in Dharamsala was abandoned midway due to a power outage, and another was relocated to Ahmedabad before being postponed. Following the suspension, several foreign players exited India for safety concerns.

The security threat was triggered after India launched airstrikes on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan, in response to a deadly attack in Kashmir. Pakistan denied involvement, but the situation escalated with both nations exchanging fire, using drones and missiles, and causing numerous casualties. A ceasefire was brokered with the help of diplomatic efforts and pressure from the United States.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has not yet resumed. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) initially announced the relocation of the last eight PSL games to the UAE, but postponed them following advice from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

As cricket fans await the restart of IPL 2025, the focus remains on ensuring player safety and successful completion of the tournament under heightened security protocols.
