In a shocking incident on Thursday evening, federal police stormed the National Press Club (NPC) in Islamabad under the pretext of targeting protesters, but instead assaulted journalists and vandalized the cafeteria — sparking nationwide outrage.

Raid Sparks Chaos
Eyewitnesses said officers entered the NPC claiming to pursue protesters, but turned on journalists, beating several and attempting to detain them. The cafeteria was also vandalized. When members of the press resisted, police fled through a back exit.

Emergency Response by Journalists
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) immediately convened an emergency press conference. PFUJ President Afzal Butt condemned the assault as “the darkest and worst incident in Pakistan’s history,” adding:

“We have seen martial law, states of emergency, and even ‘emergency plus’—but never have police stormed a press club.”

He said the future course of action would be decided in consultation with journalist bodies.

Nationwide Condemnation
The HRCP, CPNE, PFUJ, and AEMEND all condemned the raid, labeling it an attack on press freedom and even “terrorism.” Media protests have since escalated, with many calling the incident unprecedented, even compared to authoritarian eras.

Government Response
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi took immediate notice and ordered a report from Islamabad’s police chief, promising disciplinary action. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry visited the NPC, offering an unconditional apology:

“I not only condemn this incident but also apologize unconditionally to the press club administration and the journalist community.”

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar called the raid “regrettable” and pledged a full investigation.

Press Freedom Under Fire
Despite apologies, journalists argue the raid has already inflicted lasting damage on press freedom, calling it a dark chapter in Pakistan’s media history. PFUJ and allied groups are now preparing to announce their collective response.
