The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) held a meeting with paper setters for English, physics, chemistry, and mathematics to discuss ways to improve the quality of examination papers and align them with modern educational standards.

The meeting was chaired by BSEK Chairman Ghulam Hussain Soho and focused on moving exam papers away from rote-based questions toward assessments that test students’ understanding of concepts and their ability to apply knowledge.

Participants agreed that future exam papers should evaluate students’ comprehension, analytical skills, and higher-level thinking instead of mainly relying on memorized information. To support this shift, it was decided that exam papers will include balanced question weightage, clearer marking rubrics, and a bank of concept-based questions for future use.

Soho directed teachers to design question papers that promote conceptual learning, so students focus on understanding core ideas rather than memorizing answers. He said a concept-based examination system would help improve students’ intellectual development and reduce the chances of cheating during exams.

The meeting also decided that the paper-setting process will now be conducted under the supervision of the BSEK chairman and the controller of examinations to improve transparency and quality. Teachers involved in preparing exam papers will also receive travel allowances.

Soho added that starting next year, the board will hold regular consultations with paper setters to continue improving the examination system and ensure that question papers remain aligned with modern educational practices.
