Karachi received much-needed relief from the recent hot and humid spell as light to heavy showers hit different parts of the city on Tuesday morning. The pleasant change in weather came after several days of high temperatures, bringing a sense of relief to residents.
The rain was reported in many areas, including Sharea Faisal, Shah Faisal Colony, Malir’s Model Colony, Malir Halt, Rafah-e-Aam, Surjani Town, Korangi, and the airport surroundings. Many residents woke up to light drizzle early in the morning, which later turned into heavier rainfall in some parts of the city.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Karachi is expected to receive more isolated showers over the next few days. A fresh rain system is likely to affect the city between August 22 and 23.
However, despite the rainfall, the weather remained humid as sea breezes came to a stop, keeping humidity levels around 75 percent. While the rain was welcomed, concerns about waterlogging and drainage issues in low-lying areas continue to worry citizens.
The Sindh government has placed all departments on high alert ahead of possible heavy downpours. Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired an emergency meeting to review the situation. He instructed local authorities, administration, and traffic police to stay vigilant and coordinate effectively to avoid major disruptions.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab updated the CM on measures being taken to tackle drainage challenges. He shared that cleaning and desilting of more than 150 drains and 44 major choke points is ongoing to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater.
With more rain forecast, authorities have assured residents that steps are being taken to reduce urban flooding and traffic jams, though the coming days will test the city’s drainage system once again.
