On Friday evening, thunder and moderate to heavy rain fell in several parts of the city, relieving some of the heat but also causing extensive power disruptions throughout the city.

Over the next two days, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts that the weather will continue to be overcast with the possibility of further rain.

While sporadic showers were observed in Malir, Airport, Model Colony, Korangi, Nazimabad, Surjani Town, and along the Super Highway, Karachi’s weather improved due to the late-night deluge.

With 17 millimeters of rain reported, Gulshan-e-Hadeed had the most rainfall ever recorded.

Significant rainfall was also reported in other places, including Shahra-e-Faisal (12 mm), the old city neighborhoods (9 mm), Defence Phase II (7.8 mm), Jinnah International Airport (5 mm), and University Road (2 mm).

However, the city’s brittle infrastructure was shown by the first rain of the monsoon season, leading to a significant power outage in many areas of Karachi. Long-lasting power outages were reported by locals from a variety of areas; several reported going without electricity for the night.

According to a representative for K-Electric, the only power distributor in the city, rain-related issues were affecting the delivery of electricity in a number of locations. According to the spokeswoman on Thursday morning, “nearly 90 percent of affected areas now have power.”

In the meantime, the PMD has cautioned residents about potential urban flooding in low-lying regions and recommended that they exercise caution during the anticipated rainfall spell.
