Karol Nawrocki has won Poland’s presidential run-off election in a tightly contested race, securing 50.89 percent of the vote, according to official figures released by the Polish Electoral Commission. The conservative candidate narrowly defeated liberal challenger and Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who received 49.11 percent.

The election outcome was confirmed on Monday, with all votes counted and the final results slated for official publication later in the day. Nawrocki, 42, a historian and former director of the National Remembrance Institute, built his campaign on a platform focused on national interests, economic reforms, and a restrained approach toward accepting refugees, particularly from war-torn Ukraine.

Nawrocki’s conservative and Eurosceptic stance resonated with voters concerned about Poland’s sovereignty and cultural identity amid shifting dynamics within the European Union. His victory signals a potential shift in Poland’s future engagement with EU policies and its role within broader European institutions.

Although Poland’s parliament wields the primary legislative power, the presidency holds significant influence through the ability to veto laws, appoint key officials, and shape foreign policy. As such, Nawrocki’s win is expected to impact domestic governance and international relations, particularly with neighboring Ukraine and Russia.

The election was closely monitored by global stakeholders, including the United States and European Union member states, due to Poland’s critical geopolitical position in Eastern Europe. Nawrocki’s presidency may usher in a more nationalist approach to policymaking, setting the tone for Poland’s domestic and foreign affairs in the coming years.
