Faisal Karim Kundi, the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has alluded to the prospect of a no-confidence motion against the province’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, stating that opposition parties will not think twice about acting if they are able to gather a sufficient number of supporters.
“It is the constitutional right of the people to bring a no-confidence motion if the opposition has the necessary numbers,” Governor Kundi said in an exclusive interview on Samaa TV’s “Redline with Talat.” We have even used this tactic to send a prime minister home in the past.
He disclosed that in order for the motion to be successful, the opposition, which presently has 52 to 54 members in the KP Assembly, would need at least 25 to 30 additional MPs.
“Even one vote above the majority threshold is enough to initiate change,” Kundi stated, adding that there aren’t any official discussions taking on at the moment.
The governor pointed to alleged corruption, particularly the wheat and sugar scams, to directly criticize the ruling PTI and say that the people of KP had suffered under their rule. “It will be a day of salvation for the people if the PTI government falls,” he said.
“They are enough for each other; they don’t need political enemies,” he said, criticizing the PTI leadership for their internal division.
Additionally, Governor Kundi made fun of KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, suggesting that he was unable to interact with the federal government in an efficient manner.
Kundi sarcastically remarked, “The chief minister travels from Peshawar to Islamabad in five to six days, but he is sent back in five to six hours.”
“The chief minister is a good son of Islamabad—he does their work well,” he continued. However, he shouldn’t be shocked if people turn against him if he doesn’t serve them.
Lack of confidence is “not a sin.”
Governor Kundi questioned, “Is it a sin to even talk about no-confidence?” in response to criticism on the mere mention of a no-confidence motion.
He also cited a statement made by Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, who allegedly said that “minus one,” a reference to Imran Khan’s removal, had already occurred.
Kundi also made fun of the incompetence of the provincial government, pointing out that a stadium in Peshawar that has been under construction since 2017 has just had its name changed and not finished.
