Tracking the launch of new driving schools in Peshawar, the KP Police are selected to take over the issuance of Light Transport Vehicle (LTV) licenses. This move comes as the continuing conflict between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Transport Department and traffic police nears resolution.

The successful introduction of driving schools has led to powerful public support for this transition. A necessary meeting is organized today between traffic officials, the chief minister, and the chief secretary to discuss transferring LTV license issuance to the traffic police. During this meeting, the traffic police will present a detailed 14-point agenda to discuss their case.
The briefing will highlight the traffic police’s long history of issuing standard LTV driving licenses since 1970, according to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance of 1965 and the Motor Vehicle Rules of 1969.
In 2018, a provincial directive shifted the authority for issuing commercial licenses to the Transport Department, while the traffic police were to control non-commercial licenses. However, the Transport Department resumed issuing licenses for motorcycles and other vehicles. The traffic police will present this proof to support their claim.
The KP Police manage a complete traffic license system across 35 districts and have introduced an e-challan system and an online renewal process for overseas Pakistanis.
They have specified audit systems, including banking and internal audits, which the Transport Department lacks. Additionally, the Transport Department’s issuance of fraudulent licenses is currently being investigated by the FIA and other authorities.
