The administration of Bacha Khan University has expelled four students over a controversial performance during a campus festival that sparked widespread backlash.
According to officials, the incident occurred during the university’s annual two-day event, where a group of pharmacy students performed the Indian national anthem and raised related slogans. Videos of the performance were recorded and later circulated on social media, leading to strong reactions from viewers and various student groups across the country.
The footage triggered protests and demands for disciplinary action. Several student organizations termed the act inappropriate and called for strict measures against those involved. Demonstrations were also held on campus in support of national unity.
One of the students, Jibran Riaz, issued a video statement saying the performance was intended solely as entertainment. He maintained that it was similar to students performing or listening to foreign songs at university events and denied any political motive or affiliation.
However, the university’s disciplinary committee reviewed the matter during its 73rd meeting and recommended expulsion. Acting on the committee’s advice, the administration dismissed the four students, all from the Faculty of Pharmacy.
In an official statement, the university said the performance within campus premises had the potential to create unrest and undermine national harmony, particularly after the videos spread online. The hostel allocations of the expelled students were also cancelled, and they were instructed to vacate their accommodation immediately.
