Lahore – The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has taken a major step towards digital transformation with the approval of a Rs. 1.6 billion project aimed at upgrading its billing infrastructure and curbing electricity theft. This initiative is set to revolutionize power distribution by integrating smart metering technology, ensuring accurate billing, and enhancing operational efficiency.
Smart Meters for Accurate and Transparent Billing
Under this ambitious project, LESCO will procure 16,000 advanced meters, including bidirectional smart meters for solar power users and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters for industrial consumers, tube wells, and new connections. These cutting-edge meters will be linked to a centralized control room via SIM-based technology, enabling real-time monitoring and eliminating manual errors in meter readings.

This move is expected to enhance transparency in the billing system, reducing instances of overbilling and ensuring that consumers are charged only for their actual electricity consumption. Bills will now be generated based on real-time data, directly retrieved from the central control system, eliminating human intervention and reducing fraudulent practices.
A Game-Changer in Electricity Theft Prevention
One of the key benefits of this smart metering initiative is its potential to drastically reduce electricity theft, a persistent challenge in Pakistan’s power sector. By enabling automated readings and remote monitoring, LESCO will be able to promptly detect any discrepancies or unauthorized connections, taking swift action against defaulters.
Improved Efficiency & Consumer Satisfaction
LESCO officials believe that the adoption of smart meters will streamline operations, minimize financial losses, and enhance consumer trust in the electricity billing system. With accurate readings and automated billing, the company aims to improve service delivery, ensuring fair and justified electricity charges for all users.
The Future of Smart Power Management
This project aligns with Pakistan’s broader vision of digitalization in the energy sector, promoting efficient power consumption and better demand management. As more renewable energy users, particularly solar consumers, integrate with the grid, the bidirectional smart meters will enable seamless net metering, allowing users to sell excess power back to the grid with greater transparency.
The Rs. 1.6 billion investment marks a transformational shift in LESCO’s operations, setting a precedent for other power distribution companies in Pakistan to embrace modern technology for efficient, secure, and consumer-friendly energy management.
With this upgrade, LESCO is taking a proactive step towards digital transformation, ensuring a fair, transparent, and efficient electricity distribution system. Consumers can look forward to error-free billing, reduced power theft, and improved service reliability, making this initiative a win-win for both the power sector and end-users.
