LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has overturned its earlier decision that barred the Punjab interim administration from leasing land to the Pakistan Army for corporate farming.
The 20-year lease was challenged after Ahmad Rafay Alam, on behalf of the Public Interest Law Association of Pakistan, filed a case.
The Punjab government inked a contract in March to provide the Pakistan Army access to some 45,267 acres of land in the districts of Bhakkar, Khushab, and Sahiwal for corporate agriculture farming (CAF).

The LHC, citing the caretaker government’s lack of constitutional and legal capacity to make such decisions, suspended the plan’s execution.
The interim Punjab administration responded by appealing the court’s order to stay proceedings to the LHC.
The court, presided over by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, considered the government’s argument throughout the hearing before deciding to suspend its earlier decision.
According to the deal reached between the military, the Punjabi government, and private businesses, waste and underutilised land will be turned into productive farmland.
The land will be provided by the Punjab government, and the army would administer the project using its resources.

The commercial sector will also contribute and support, especially by supplying fertiliser.
It is important to note that the agreement stipulates that the Punjab government will receive a percentage of the money earned from cultivation for agricultural development and research.
The project will be expanded and future crops will be paid for with the remaining funds.
