Local Phone Industry Earned $300m and Created 50,000 Jobs
Since January 2021, local mobile manufacturing/assembling has generated $300 million in investment and employed 50,000 people, according to official documents.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) On January 28, 2021, in accordance with the policy, issued the Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Regulations. 31 businesses have now received MDM Authorizations allowing them to produce mobile devices in Pakistan. Popular brands including Samsung, Nokia, Oppo, TECNO, Infinix, Vgotel, Q-mobile, etc. are represented by these businesses.

Mobile technology is crucial to the nation’s communication and digitization. Around 22 million mobile devices are demanded locally each year. The majority of mobile devices were commercially imported as Completely Built Units before the implementation of the mobile device manufacturing policy; however, the trend has turned to local manufacturing.
In comparison to the 24.66 million phone handsets produced or assembled locally in the calendar year 2021, local manufacturing facilities produced or assembled 21.94 million phone handsets in 2022, a decrease that can be attributed to problems with imports caused by restrictions on the opening of letters of credit (LCs).
According to PTA, local manufacturing plants have manufactured 21.94 million phones handset during the calendar year 2022 -compared to 1.53 million commercially imported phones.
Same as the commercial imports of mobile phones handsets stood at 10.26 million in 2021 as compared to 24.51 million in 2020
13.15 million 2G and 8.79 million smartphone handsets were among the 21.94 million mobile phones that were produced or built locally. In addition, the PTA data shows that 44 percent of mobile devices on the Pakistani network are 2G and 56 percent are smartphones.
