French President Emmanuel Macron has said that if former US President Donald Trump truly wants to win the Nobel Peace Prize, he must take concrete steps to end the war in Gaza. Speaking to France’s BFM TV from New York on Tuesday, Macron stressed that Trump is the only leader with enough influence over Israel to stop the conflict.
“There is one person who can do something about it, and that is the US president,” Macron said. “The United States supplies the weapons and equipment that allow this war to continue. That gives him the power to bring it to an end.”
Trump, addressing the UN General Assembly earlier in the day, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and pledged to pursue peace negotiations. However, he rejected global efforts to recognize a Palestinian state, calling such moves a reward for Hamas.
Macron, reacting to Trump’s remarks, said: “I see an American president who says he wants peace, who wants the Nobel Peace Prize. That prize is only possible if he stops this conflict.”
Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by countries including Israel, Cambodia, and Pakistan, largely for his role in brokering regional peace pacts and ceasefires. The White House argued he has achieved more for global peace than any other recent leader.
Meanwhile, momentum for Palestinian statehood is growing at the United Nations. On Monday, France, Belgium, and four other countries announced they would recognize Palestine, a move that Macron formally confirmed in New York alongside Saudi officials.
“We must preserve the chance of a two-state solution, Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security,” Macron said, drawing applause from world leaders.
The Gaza conflict, now stretching nearly two years, remains one of the most divisive issues on the global stage. While Trump seeks to highlight his record of conflict resolution, Macron insists his credibility depends on ending one of the world’s most pressing wars.
