Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has played down recent criticism from Cristiano Ronaldo, calling for unity and a forward-focused approach as the club continues its rebuild.

Ronaldo, who enjoyed two trophy-filled spells at Old Trafford, stated in an interview earlier this week that United were “not on a good path” and suggested that Amorim could not “do miracles” with the current setup. The Al-Nassr star also voiced concerns about what he described as a lack of long-term planning at the club.

Responding ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur, Amorim acknowledged the influence and legacy of his former Portugal teammate but stressed that the club is committed to change.

He stated that Manchester United has made mistakes in recent years, but emphasized that significant structural improvements are now underway. According to Amorim, the club is working to reshape its culture, refine player behavior, and improve performance standards across the board.

United has shown signs of progress under the new manager, climbing into the top eight and closing the gap to second place after a four-match unbeaten run. Saturday’s match against Tottenham carries added importance, as the London side defeated United in last season’s Europa League final, costing the club a Champions League spot.

Amorim highlighted that the team is more confident and tactically stronger this season, noting that the squad has evolved and understands the demands of his system more clearly. He also pointed out that the absence of European competition has allowed more training time, helping the coaching staff establish stronger bonds with players and build a clearer identity on the pitch.

While he admitted that returning to European football remains a key goal, Amorim maintained that the current situation has offered valuable time to develop the team properly.

Manchester United will look to continue their improving form when they face Tottenham, with a chance to move into the league’s top positions and further demonstrate the progress Amorim insists is already taking shape.
