Permits for markhor hunting in the area have been issued by the Wildlife Department of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) in conjunction with the trophy hunting season.
Details indicate that the permit to hunt the Astor markhor was put up for auction by the GB administration, and it sold for a record $186,000.
A wildlife department official revealed to a media outlet that they possessed four permits for markhor hunting. The Astor Markhor was the subject of the highest bid.

Twelve blue sheep, eighty-eight ibexes, and four Astor markhors were among the 104 permits for endangered animals that the local administration put up for auction during the event.
The subsequent highest offers for the markhors hunting were $181,000 and $177,000, in that order. The season for trophy hunting will begin on November 1 and run through April 25.
It should be mentioned that only 20% of the money obtained through hunting permits goes into the national coffers; the remaining amount is allocated to the local community’s health and development.
The Markhor hunting license sold for $165,000 last year. While trophy hunting is not popular, conservationists claim that it prevents poaching and strengthens local communities.
