In the Almaty Open final on Sunday, former world number one Daniil Medvedev defeated Corentin Moutet 7-5, 4-,6 6-3, ending an 882-day wait for his 21st ATP Tour championship.
The 29-year-old Russian Medvedev has lost six finals since winning the Italian Open in May 2023, including the US Open and Australian Open.
According to the former U.S. Open champion, “It continues my funny story of 21 titles in 21 different cities,” Medvedev remarked.
The 14th-ranked Medvedev made a lot of unforced mistakes against Moutet, a Frenchman vying for his first ATP title.
In the first two sets, the Russian committed 13 unforced errors, compared to Moutet’s four. However, Medvedev served three aces in the final and maintained composure to win.
“Winning feels fantastic, even though I wasn’t quite satisfied with my performance in some parts of the game. I performed well in the most crucial points,” Medvedev remarked.
