At 14 years and 69 days old, a chicken named Pearl has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest living chicken, bringing joy to pet lovers worldwide. Pearl is an Easter Egger breed, known for their colorful eggs and friendly nature, but her age is far beyond the usual five to eight years these chickens typically live.
Pearl was hatched on March 13, 2011, by her owner, Sonya Hill, in a home incubator. Hill describes Pearl as part of the family, living a quiet indoor life. Though age has slowed her down, she still enjoys wandering into the living room when the TV is on, as if ready to watch along.
She shares her cozy home with an elderly cat and a newborn kitten. Hill says the kitten often curls up beside Pearl, and the chicken seems to enjoy the company. Despite her age, Pearl occasionally lays eggs, including one shortly after receiving her Guinness World Records certificate.
The previous record for the oldest chicken was held by Peanut from Illinois, who lived to an incredible 21 years and 238 days before passing away in December 2023. While Pearl hasn’t broken that all-time record, she now holds the title of the world’s oldest living chicken.
For Hill, this milestone is more than just a record. It’s a reflection of the deep bond she shares with Pearl. “She’s been with me through so much. She’s family,” she said. Pearl’s gentle nature and remarkable lifespan serve as an inspiration, showing how care, love, and a little luck can lead to extraordinary achievements.
