Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has called time on his T20 international career, saying he wants to dedicate his energy to Test matches and one-day internationals.

The 34-year-old left-armer played 65 T20Is, finishing with 79 wickets — the second-highest tally for Australia behind Adam Zampa.

Starc said Test cricket has always been his main priority, with major goals ahead including the Ashes, an away series in India, and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“I’ve loved playing every T20 game for Australia, especially the 2021 World Cup,” he said. “But this feels like the right time to step aside and give the next generation a clear run into the team.”

Tributes from cricket officials
Selectors’ chair George Bailey praised Starc’s ability to turn games with quick breakthroughs, calling him crucial to Australia’s 2021 World Cup win.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg backed the decision, saying it would help prolong his Test and ODI career. “Mitch has always put the team first, and this decision is another example of that,” he said.

Squad for New Zealand series announced
With Starc unavailable, Australia has named a 14-player squad for the upcoming T20 series against New Zealand. The group includes Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, and Ben Dwarshuis in the pace department.

Other updates include the return of Marcus Stoinis and Matt Short from injury, while Pat Cummins will sit out to manage his workload. Nathan Ellis is also absent due to the birth of his first child.

Australia’s squad: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.

Starc’s T20 chapter is closed, but he remains central to Australia’s red-ball and 50-over plans, with his sights set firmly on the next Ashes and the 2027 World Cup.
