Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reignited tensions between India and Pakistan with a series of sharp statements during a nationally televised address, threatening further military action and ruling out any comprehensive dialogue with Islamabad. The comments, made on Monday, are seen as a significant escalation in the already strained relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

In his speech, Prime Minister Modi stated that “Operation Sindoor has been suspended, not ended,” signaling that military operations could resume depending on Pakistan’s actions. He warned that the future of bilateral relations would be judged solely on Islamabad’s response to terrorism and its willingness to dismantle terror infrastructure.

Modi made it clear that any future talks between India and Pakistan would be confined strictly to issues of terrorism and what India refers to as “Pakistani Kashmir,” a term used for Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Rejecting any broader peace dialogue, he firmly stated, “Talks and terrorism cannot go together. Trade and terrorism cannot go together. Water and blood cannot flow together.”

The Indian leader also alleged that India’s military had struck deep inside Pakistani territory and claimed that Islamabad later sought a ceasefire, portraying it as a retreat by Pakistan in recent hostilities. He accused Pakistan of using “nuclear blackmail” and made it clear that India would not be intimidated by such threats.

Modi’s declaration that “the rules of warfare have changed” and his vow of immediate retaliation in the event of future provocations underscore a shift in India’s strategic posture. “We will respond in our own way and at our own time,” he emphasized, indicating a readiness to take unilateral action if necessary.

The speech marks a hardening of India’s stance ahead of upcoming elections and comes amid growing domestic political pressure. Analysts say the Indian Prime Minister’s remarks may lead to heightened military alertness along the Line of Control and further complicate prospects for regional peace.
