OpenAI has launched Sora 2, its latest artificial intelligence model designed for creating realistic video and audio. Alongside the new model, the company has introduced a TikTok-style social media app called Sora, now available on iOS in the United States and Canada. The app allows users to generate and share short AI-powered videos of themselves and their friends.

Sora 2 is an upgrade from the first version of Sora released last year. The new model is designed to follow real-world physics more closely, making its outputs look more natural. For example, where older AI tools might have bent reality to make a basketball magically drop into the hoop after a miss, Sora 2 instead makes the ball bounce off the rim or backboard in a realistic way. Early demos from OpenAI include beach volleyball rallies, skateboard tricks, diving stunts, and gymnastics routines that look lifelike.

The new Sora app adds a social layer to the model, allowing users to upload their own likeness through a one-time verification process. Once verified, they can feature themselves in different AI-generated scenarios. A unique feature called “cameos” lets users invite friends to join them in these clips, making the app more interactive.

To ensure safe use, the app comes with privacy controls and parental monitoring options. Parents can restrict features like infinite scrolling, algorithm-driven personalization, and direct messaging. OpenAI also allows users to opt out of linking their ChatGPT activity to Sora recommendations.

At launch, the Sora app is free to download and use. Monetization will begin later, focusing on charges for generating extra videos during busy times. Access is currently invite-only, but ChatGPT Pro subscribers can test the Sora 2 Pro model directly without needing an app invite. OpenAI has also confirmed that global expansion is planned soon, bringing Sora to more countries beyond the U.S. and Canada.

This launch shows OpenAI’s step forward in blending advanced AI technology with social experiences, opening the door to a new way of creating and sharing content online.
