The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Science and Technology has raised significant concerns about the operations and transparency of the National Testing Service (NTS) during a recent meeting chaired by Khawaja Sheeraz Mehmood. The committee members criticized the lack of accountability surrounding NTS, questioning the unresolved inquiries into the organization’s alleged misconduct. The chairman stated that despite serious allegations of public fraud against NTS, no substantial action has been taken to hold the organization accountable.

During the meeting, it was revealed by the Federal Secretary for Science and Technology that NTS is not a government body but a private entity registered in collaboration with COMSATS University. Federal Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Magsi emphasized that NTS has grown into a large-scale business operating nationally, prompting further scrutiny of its legal and operational structure. The committee decided to summon the Rector of COMSATS University in the next session to explain the university’s involvement with NTS and address the concerns presented.

Minister Khalid Magsi expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of COMSATS University representatives from the meeting and ordered a formal warning to be issued to the university for its non-compliance. He highlighted the need for immediate cooperation given the university’s direct affiliation with NTS. The committee has also called for a comprehensive report detailing NTS’s organizational framework, operational processes, and existing accountability measures in the next meeting.

Additionally, the Ministry of Science and Technology presented its proposed development budget for the upcoming fiscal year, requesting Rs. 11.75 billion for the continuation of 33 existing projects and the initiation of 9 new ones. These projects aim to bolster the country’s science and technology infrastructure while fostering innovation and research. Committee members evaluated the budget proposal, seeking more detailed information on project priorities, expected outcomes, and timelines to ensure that public funds are effectively used to address national scientific and technological needs. The committee is set to further examine these budgetary plans in future meetings.
