Islamabad — May 5, 2025: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued a stern directive urging citizens to cancel the Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) of deceased family members. Failure to comply, the authority warns, may result in serious legal consequences.
In an official notice released today, NADRA reminded the public that canceling a deceased person’s CNIC is a legal requirement under national registration laws. Families who fail to do so risk enabling misuse of identity documents, including fraud, illegal transactions, and identity theft.

“NADRA will take strict legal action against individuals or families who neglect to cancel the CNICs of their deceased relatives,” a spokesperson stated. “This is not merely a clerical step—it is essential to maintaining accurate national records and preventing serious criminal misuse.”
To simplify the process, NADRA has streamlined the CNIC cancellation procedure. Families are encouraged to visit the nearest NADRA center with a valid death certificate and other required documents.
Legal professionals have echoed NADRA’s warning, emphasizing that unreported CNICs can cause legal hurdles in matters such as inheritance, property disputes, and banking transactions. Retaining these documents without cancellation may also be viewed as negligence under the law.
In closing, NADRA appealed to citizens’ sense of civic responsibility, making it clear that ignorance of this duty will not exempt anyone from legal accountability.
