Nawaz Sharif Hospital will treat cancer for free

Lahore – April 2025: The Punjab government is all set to introduce a landmark healthcare initiative with the proposed establishment of the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Treatment and Research Institute. A draft bill, prepared by the provincial health department, is expected to be presented soon in the Punjab Assembly for legislative approval.

According to the draft, the institute will function under the supervision of a 13-member board, chaired by the Chief Minister of Punjab. The core objective of the facility is to provide free cancer treatment to underprivileged patients across the province, helping ease the burden on existing cancer care facilities.

At the same time, the hospital will also offer treatment options on a partial or full payment basis for patients who can afford to contribute, making it a sustainable and inclusive healthcare model.

Not a Government Hospital – But Public Focused

The draft bill outlines that the hospital’s employees will not be treated as government staff, allowing the institute operational flexibility. Furthermore, the institution will be empowered to collect donations, helping support its services and long-term viability.

Proposed Structure of the Institute

The administrative framework of the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Treatment and Research Institute will include:

  • Chairman
  • Dean
  • Administrator
  • Director of Nursing
  • Director of Finance

These roles aim to ensure efficient management, quality care, and strong financial oversight.

With the increasing number of cancer patients in Pakistan, especially in Punjab, this institute is expected to become a major center for cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research. The initiative is being widely praised for its vision to improve access to critical healthcare services for the underserved.

When Will the Bill Be Approved?

The Punjab Assembly is expected to take up the proposed draft for discussion and approval in its upcoming session. Once passed, it will pave the way for the development and construction of the institute, bringing Pakistan one step closer to better cancer care.
