The National Cyber Crimes Investigation Authority (NCCIA) has issued a public warning about fake “New Year greeting links” being shared online, urging people to stay alert to avoid fraud and data theft.
According to the NCCIA, cyber criminals are actively circulating fake New Year greeting messages and links, especially on WhatsApp and other messaging platforms. These messages often promise digital greeting cards or gifts but are designed to trick users into clicking on malicious links.
The authority said such links can lead to financial losses and theft of personal information. As part of the alert, the NCCIA advised people not to click on unknown or suspicious links and strictly warned against sharing WhatsApp verification codes with anyone.
Cybersecurity experts explained that many of these scams involve fake app files or malware links disguised as New Year greeting cards. Once a user clicks the link, hackers can gain access to the phone.
Experts warned that personal data stored on mobile phones, including photos, contact lists, and even bank account details, could be stolen through these attacks.
The NCCIA urged the public to remain cautious during New Year celebrations, verify messages before interacting with them, and immediately report suspicious activity to relevant authorities.
