The National Computer Emergency Response Team (nCERT) has issued an urgent advisory to Pakistani internet users, warning them about growing cyber threats linked to social media usage. The advisory, titled “Safe, Diligent, and Responsible Usage of Social Media,” outlines key risks that are becoming increasingly prevalent in Pakistan’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.
As of January 2025, over 66.9 million individuals—approximately 26.4% of the national population—are active on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube. The advisory stresses that the widespread adoption of these platforms has led to a surge in misinformation, disinformation, and digital propaganda. These tactics are being used to manipulate public opinion, incite panic, and deepen societal divisions, especially during politically sensitive periods.
The advisory also highlights a sharp rise in online scams and cyberbullying. Phishing attacks, fake job or business offers, and identity theft are common strategies employed by cybercriminals. Vulnerable groups such as women and children are increasingly being targeted through grooming, harassment, and blackmail involving sensitive personal content. Such acts not only harm individuals but also expose underlying weaknesses in digital awareness and cybersecurity enforcement.
To counter these risks, nCERT recommends robust digital hygiene. Users are advised to use strong, unique passwords, enable two-factor authentication, disable location tracking, and keep their devices updated. Adjusting privacy settings, taking screenshots of suspicious activity, and avoiding emotionally manipulative content are also emphasized.
The advisory warns that constant exposure to algorithm-driven content can negatively affect mental health, especially among younger users. It encourages citizens to report cyber incidents to authorities like FIA-NCCIA, PTA, and nCERT. The public is urged to think critically, verify sources before sharing content, and safeguard personal data.
With digital threats evolving rapidly, nCERT calls on users to adopt safer online habits and support a responsible and secure internet environment in Pakistan.
