The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has been asked to grant approval for the installation of a telemetry system at Kotri Barrage to monitor water inflows and outflows.
In a letter to IRSA, the Chief Engineer Indus at NESPAK requested a no-objection certificate (NOC) for the project. Similar systems have already been cleared for Sukkur and Guddu barrages.
So far, NESPAK has installed telemetry systems at 27 sites across Sindh and Punjab. According to IRSA records, the full rollout is scheduled for completion by June 30, 2026.
Progress, however, has faced challenges. Ongoing repair and construction works at Sukkur and Guddu barrages have delayed installation there. IRSA noted that the systems cannot be put in place until these works are finished.
Adding to the hurdles, the Sindh Irrigation Department revealed that 10 gates of the Sukkur Barrage have been closed since 1939. International experts have been brought in to explore whether these gates can be repaired or replaced.
