New Bill in US House Seeks to Curb Trump’s Authority Over Iran Military Actions

In order to restrict President Donald Trump’s authority to initiate military action against Iran, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has sponsored a bill in the House of Representatives.

Before launching an invasion against the Islamic Republic, the US president would need to secure legislative approval, according to the proposed legislation. Additionally, it directs the administration to “terminate” all current military operations against Iran that have not been specifically approved by Congress.

The action follows recent escalations between Washington and Tehran, which have led to increased tensions in the Middle East. The goal of the proposal, according to Massie, a Republican with a recognized libertarian leaning, is to restore Congress’s constitutional power to declare war.

In a statement, Massie stated, “A president should not unilaterally take the nation into war without the consent of the people’s representatives.”

As bipartisan outrage over the administration’s Iran policy grows, a parallel bill was presented in the Senate on Monday. Advocates think the legislative drive will put pressure on the White House to exhibit prudence, even if the proposals might not survive a presidential veto.

According to a congressional staffer familiar with the talks, “even if the bill doesn’t become law, it sends a strong signal that the people’s representatives are unwilling to cede this critical power to the executive.”

Regarding the proposed legislation, the White House has not yet responded. Officials have, however, repeatedly supported the administration’s right to use force in “self-defense” of US interests and personnel in the area.
