New Law to Guard Illegal Residential Schemes on Green Areas

On January 19 of this year, Chief Judge Muhammad Qasim Khan of the Lahore High Court gave the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) the order to halt all building activities in the illegal housing developments built on agricultural property and to halt the amnesty being granted to them.
There could be as many as 2,000 unlawful housing developments in Punjab right now, most of which are located in large cities like Lahore and its vicinity.

The ordinance states that illegal projects developed or in progress on non-conforming land (including green areas) may be made legal upon payment of a fine equal to 2% of the residential value as determined by the applicable valuation table, followed by projects lacking parks or open spaces or graveyards upon payment of a fine equal to 2% of the value of the deficient land or the provision of land (graveyard) as a substitute.
