According to authorities, one man was shot dead in the Swedish city of Orebro on Friday in what was most likely a gang-related incident.
Near the Orebro Mosque, another man was hurt in an attack and sent to the hospital. Regarding the severity of the man’s injuries, police would not disclose.
“I want to make clear that at this time, we do not perceive any relation to the mosque. However, during a news conference, a police official informed reporters, “We do see a connection to criminal groups.”
Although authorities reported that no arrests had been made as of yet, at least one suspect was observed leaving the site. The crime is being investigated as murder and attempted murder, according to the police.
The incidence of murders in Sweden is among the highest in Europe, and the country has seen gang-related violence for more than ten years. However, the murder rate is comparable to that of other nations.
Police released a statement saying, “Based on the current situation regarding the shooting in Orebro, the incident is believed to be linked to the criminal network environment,” without elaborating.
In February, the deadliest gun incident in Sweden claimed the lives of ten students and educators in Orebro, around 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Stockholm.
The shooter in February was not connected to any criminal gangs; he was a former student who also committed suicide. There was no obvious motivation in the case, according to investigators.
