OnePlus has temporarily disabled its AI Writer feature following reports that the tool was blocking content on politically sensitive topics. The company attributed the issue to a technical problem, though the timing comes amid growing concerns about potential censorship in its Notes app.
Users Report Restrictions
Over the past week, users on Reddit, Twitter, and the OnePlus community forum said the AI Writer refused to generate content about topics often censored in China, including the Dalai Lama, Taiwan, and Arunachal Pradesh. Messages such as “try entering something else” appeared, and in some cases, generated text vanished and was replaced with an error.
The incidents sparked concerns that China-specific content restrictions may have inadvertently affected the global version of the tool.
OnePlus Responds
On Dec. 6, OnePlus announced an internal review and disabled AI Writer to address what it described as technical inconsistencies. A company spokesperson said:
“As the issue requires more time to address, we’re temporarily disabling the AI Writer in Notes to ensure a consistent user experience while we refine the underlying technical issue.”
The company emphasized that the problem was unintentional and reaffirmed its commitment to “Community-first technology.”
Ongoing Concerns
As of Dec. 8, AI Writer had not been restored, and OnePlus has not provided a timeline for when the feature will return. Users outside China have been affected, leading to questions about how censorship-like behavior appeared on international devices.
Meanwhile, creators and writers who depend on AI Writer remain without access, while the company works to resolve the issue.
