OpenAI has rolled out a major update to the ChatGPT mobile app, letting users access Voice Mode directly within the main chat—no more switching to a separate listening interface. The upgrade is available on both Android and iOS.
Previously, tapping the waveform icon would move users to a dedicated Voice Mode screen, where ChatGPT would listen to prompts, generate replies, and speak them aloud—outside the main chat window. The new update streamlines this process: tapping the waveform button now keeps everything inside the current chat, with a live transcript of ChatGPT’s spoken response. This makes it easier to scroll, review earlier messages, and maintain context.
Enhanced Visual Support
OpenAI says the updated layout also supports visuals, including images, maps, web pages, and more, all displayed alongside voice replies.
Seamless Switching Between Text and Voice
Users can type messages at any point, and ChatGPT will continue responding in voice as long as Voice Mode is active. Ending voice output is simple—just tap the End button. Early testers note that spoken input appears inside quotes, while typed messages remain unquoted, keeping both formats clear in a single thread.
Availability and Settings
In-chat Voice Mode is enabled by default after updating the app. Users who prefer the old interface can revert via:
Settings > Voice Mode > Separate Mode
The feature is currently limited to the ChatGPT mobile app, with no confirmed timeline yet for a rollout on the web, desktop apps, or the Atlas browser.
