The opposition in Pakistan has demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the recent sugar scandal, alleging large-scale corruption and misuse of public resources.

Speaking to the media outside Parliament House, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser called for an independent inquiry, saying the matter involved serious financial misconduct in the sugar sector. He stressed that all those responsible, whether bureaucrats or others, must be held accountable for causing losses to the national treasury.

Qaiser accused the government of protecting the real culprits while targeting opposition leaders. He criticised recent sentences against opposition figures, claiming that the principles of justice had been ignored. He also questioned the government’s direction, warning that even members of the National Assembly who were not part of the opposition were facing threats.

Speaking about PTI’s Omar Ayub, Qaiser said Ayub had obtained a stay order from the court and remained the recognised leader of the opposition in the National Assembly.

Vowing to continue their political struggle, Qaiser said the opposition could not be silenced and would not step back from its demands. He repeated his call for a judicial commission to ensure a transparent investigation into the sugar scandal.

The sugar sector in Pakistan has faced repeated allegations of hoarding, price manipulation, and corruption, with critics saying that powerful political and business figures have long benefited from weak oversight.
