In December of 2023, there was a 16 percent year-over-year (YoY) fall in bilateral commerce between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Bilateral commerce between the bordering nations decreased by 28% in the last month of 2023 on a month-over-month (MoM) basis. Details indicate that in December, the value of bilateral trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan was $125.2 million.

Pakistan’s exports to Afghanistan came to $86.4 million in December 2023, down 7% YoY and 22% MoM from $92.7 million in December 2022 and $111 million in total in November 2023.

Imports reached $38.8 million in December 2023, a 39% MoM and 32% YoY decline.

Although the exact causes of this steep drop in bilateral commerce are unknown, analysts speculate that a number of variables, such as geopolitical tensions and economic difficulties, may be influencing the negative trend.
