Pakistan has taken a significant step towards environmental protection by launching its first drone-based environmental surveillance system in Punjab. The initiative, led by the Environment Department, is designed to closely monitor industrial activities and identify sources of air and environmental pollution across the province.

The new system utilizes cutting-edge drones equipped with thermal imaging technology, allowing for precise detection of pollution sources. These drones have been deployed across various industrial zones, including Lahore, where they have already uncovered illegal activities harming the environment.

During recent operations, drone surveillance identified three illegal pyrolysis plants operating in Lahore’s Mehmood Booti area. The drones also detected four additional industries contributing to environmental degradation, leading to the seizure of hundreds of carbon-filled sacks. Following these discoveries, an official report was compiled, and responsible officers have been asked to explain their role in these violations.

Environment Director General Imran Hamid Sheikh described the initiative as a transformative step for environmental governance in Pakistan. He announced that all industries and brick kilns would be digitally mapped using drone technology. Furthermore, the drone footage will be used to evaluate the performance of environmental officers, ensuring greater accountability and effectiveness in pollution control.

This drone surveillance system is expected to play a critical role in identifying polluters in real-time, closing existing monitoring gaps, and enhancing the overall enforcement of environmental regulations in Punjab.
