Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has taken notice of the reported death of a medical student at Fatima Jinnah Medical University in Lahore and has asked the university to submit a detailed report on the incident.
According to reports, a 22-year-old female student died on Tuesday night after allegedly jumping from the fourth floor of a hostel building at the university. The student belonged to Azad Jammu and Kashmir and was living in the government hostel on campus.
In a letter issued on Thursday, the PMDC registrar directed the university’s principal to provide a factual account of the incident, calling it a serious matter with potential impact on the wider student community. The council said the information is necessary to remain informed and to provide guidance or support if required.
The PMDC has asked the university to share specific details within seven days, including the date, time and circumstances of the incident according to official records, information about any inquiry or fact-finding committee formed (along with its members and terms of reference), initial findings and the expected timeline for the final report, steps taken or planned to improve counselling and mental health services, and safety measures introduced in the hostel following the incident.
Separately, the council has advised all medical and dental colleges across Pakistan to strengthen their student support systems. It urged institutions to hire qualified counsellors or psychologists, establish confidential counselling services, and closely monitor signs of stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout among students.
The regulator emphasized that timely counselling and proactive mental health support can help prevent such tragic incidents. This development comes amid other recent reports of student suicide attempts in Lahore.
