Pakistan Offers a Valuable Window to Gandhara Civilization

ISLAMABAD, Jul. 11 (APP): Pakistan’s president, Dr. Arif Alvi, said on Tuesday that the country’s unique fusion of ancient history and the Buddha’s teachings of peace and compassion provided the world with an invaluable window into the Gandhara culture.

In his speech at the three-day Gandhara Symposium 2023, he stated, “In today’s world, where hatred is on the rise and growing polarisation is fueling conflicts, it’s time to rediscover the role of cultural diplomacy to promote dialogue among civilizations.”

The Prime Minister’s Task Force on Gandhara Tourism, the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), and the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa organised the symposium, which was titled “Cultural Diplomacy: Reviving Gandhara Civilization and Buddhist Heritage in Pakistan.”

The purpose of the gathering, which included monks and interfaith experts from countries including Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, China, Malaysia, South Korea, and Vietnam, was to investigate Pakistan’s rich Buddhist heritage and foster an environment that would support Gandhara tourism.

The quest of Buddha, according to President Alvi, rekindles the spirit of introspection with a precept to refrain from taking the lives of living beings and to protect the environment.

He emphasised that travellers from all around the world may learn about the Gandhara culture, which ruled Pakistan centuries ago, and visit beautiful Buddhist sites there.

He urged teamwork to spread the word about the Gandhara civilization’s inclusive and cosmopolitan nature and aid society in assimilating diversity of cultures.

In order to spread a message of peace and intercultural understanding, the president welcomed the Buddhist monks to the nation.

Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, Minister of State and Chairman of the PM Task Force on Gandhara Tourism, stated that visitors from all over the world continue to be enthralled by the Gandhara culture and emphasised the importance of preserving and reviving the ancient Buddhist artefacts.

He claimed that cultural diplomacy promoted tradition and understanding between civilizations and expressed confidence that the symposium would serve as an effective forum for promoting Pakistan’s cultural legacy.

In his welcome speech, ISSI Director General Sohail Mahmood stated that the Gandhara civilization served as a melting pot for various cultures and civilizations because it was located at the intersection of old trade routes. He asserted that Pakistan placed utmost significance on safeguarding and developing the Buddhist history of Gandhara.

The symposium’s main goals include raising knowledge of Gandhara and encouraging an appreciation of Pakistan’s extensive and diverse cultural legacy, both at home and abroad. It also focuses on examining innovative programmes that support the nation’s efforts in cultural diplomacy and aid in promoting tourism, particularly faith tourism.
