Out of the total accidents, 217 were caused by unsafe level crossings, emphasizing the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and stricter safety protocols. Human error was the second most common cause, leading to 103 accidents. In response, Pakistan Railways took disciplinary action against 259 employees found responsible.
Material failures, including mechanical and technical issues, accounted for 57 accidents, indicating gaps in equipment maintenance and inspection processes. Only two accidents over the five-year period were linked to terrorism or sabotage.
The findings highlight a critical need for investment in safer level crossings, improved staff training, and enhanced maintenance practices to reduce accident rates and protect lives across Pakistan’s railway system.
