The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has made it compulsory for telecom operators to participate in the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz spectrum bands in the upcoming 5G auction. The decision is aimed at ensuring that 5G services launched in Pakistan are fully functional and provide a real and reliable user experience.

Officials said that in some countries, 5G was introduced without making specific spectrum bands mandatory, which caused delays and limited service quality. PTA has chosen a stricter approach to make sure that operators roll out proper 5G services instead of limiting them to small trials or partial coverage.

Under the auction framework, the 2600 MHz band can be used for both 4G and 5G services, while the 3500 MHz band is reserved only for 5G deployment. Although operators can bid for other available spectrum bands based on their business strategies, participation in these two key bands is compulsory.

PTA officials explained that this requirement will help build a strong and practical 5G ecosystem soon after the spectrum is allocated. The goal is to avoid delays and ensure that consumers experience the real benefits of high-speed 5G connectivity.

Before the main auction, PTA will conduct a mock auction to test the bidding software and allow telecom operators to understand the process. Bidding manuals will be provided in advance, and the entire system will be tested during the mock exercise. Officials said this step will help operators become familiar with technical and procedural requirements before the actual bidding begins.

PTA has confirmed that all six spectrum bands will be available on the auction day. The auction may conclude in one day, but it could extend to two or three days depending on the level of competition and interest shown by operators.

February 27 has been set as the deadline for submission of bid documents. Each telecom operator planning to participate must submit a bank guarantee of 15 million US dollars. PTA will also finalize the number of participating companies on the same date.
