A Pakistani oil tanker carrying around 80 million litres of crude oil has entered Pakistan’s maritime zone after successfully passing through the Strait of Hormuz, becoming the first Pakistani vessel to cross the route after its recent closure due to regional tensions.
The tanker, MT Karachi, has traveled through the Gulf of Oman and is expected to dock at Karachi Port on Wednesday, according to officials.
The journey took place after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz following attacks involving the United States and Israel, raising concerns over one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
Officials said Iranian authorities granted special permission to the tanker, allowing it to pass through Iranian territorial waters during the transit.
The Pakistan Navy provided security to the vessel while it crossed the sensitive area to ensure safe passage.
The tanker had departed from Das Island in the United Arab Emirates on February 28.
According to international reports, the payment for the oil cargo was made in Chinese yuan, highlighting the increasing use of alternative payment methods in regional energy trade during ongoing geopolitical tensions.
