On Friday, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, announced that Pakistan’s AI policy will be presented for Cabinet approval in August. During a meeting of the Special Task Force on AI, Iqbal urged all relevant parties to expedite their consultations with stakeholders, emphasizing that artificial intelligence (AI) is not a future concept but a present reality.

Iqbal highlighted the government’s key achievements in AI, including the establishment of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence in 2017 and the formation of the National Task Force on Artificial Intelligence in 2023. He criticized past policies for hindering economic progress and noted that some elements continue to obstruct the country’s development, though he did not provide specifics.
In conjunction with the Prime Minister’s recent visit to China, an agreement was made to provide IT skills training to 200,000 young Pakistanis to better prepare them for the evolving tech landscape. Iqbal stressed the need for Pakistan to advance its capabilities in AI, despite challenges such as some countries restricting access to tech education for Pakistani students.
He emphasized that the government should leverage insights from the special AI group and announced plans for a major AI conference to explore its potential in sectors like health, education, finance, and agriculture. Iqbal is optimistic about the possibility of Pakistani youth creating tech giants comparable to Facebook or Twitter.
