Pakistan’s Power Sector is the Largest Source of CO2 Emissions
According to a research conducted by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Pakistan’s electricity sector is the country’s greatest source of CO2 emissions.

Despite accounting for more than a quarter of the country’s CO2 emissions, the electricity sector represents the most substantial opportunity for decarbonization since zero-carbon technologies are cost-effective.
In the last three years, Pakistan has added 5090 MWs of coal-based electricity generation capacity, accounting for 95% of the country’s total installed capacity, with over 6000 MWs currently under construction.

Furthermore, the paper claims that this is happening at a time when coal-fired power plants and plans are being phased out around the world due to high climate, air pollution, and economic costs.
It went on to say that in the Thar region alone, a vast cluster of coal mines and power plants has been proposed, with a total of 9 power plants and 3,700 MWs of capacity, of which 660 MWs has already been assigned.
