Pakistan’s Tourism from Record Spending to Sustainable Transformation
In a noteworthy development, Pakistan’s tourism sector is currently on the upswing, with the World Bank reporting an impressive $16 billion in visitor spending for 2022. With expectations of this upward trend continuing, the nation has set ambitious targets, eyeing a remarkable $30 billion in tourism revenue by 2033. Despite the significant contribution of 5.9 percent to Pakistan’s GDP in 2022, experts believe there still needs to be more potential within the sector.

The Post-Covid era has witnessed an extraordinary surge in domestic tourism, drawing over 1.2 million tourists to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province in 2021 and 2022 alone.
Responding to this influx and acknowledging the need for sustainable growth, the “Travel Responsibly for Experiencing Eco-tourism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” (TREK) initiative has been unveiled. A collaborative effort involving the Government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the World Bank, and Nestlé Pakistan, TREK aligns with the ongoing Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Integrated Tourism Development Project (KITE), established in 2020, which concentrates on heritage preservation and tourism infrastructure development.
In tandem with these initiatives, TREK has initiated awareness campaigns for tourists and comprehensive training programs for local communities and hospitality businesses. Over 650 participants from more than 150 establishments in key tourist areas, including Peshawar, Nathiagali, Abbottabad, Swat, Naran, and Chitral districts, have already benefited from TREK’s proactive measures.
