Islamabad – In a critical diplomatic outreach, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday called on United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to advise India to act responsibly and with restraint, as regional tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors continue to escalate. The conversation comes in the wake of intensifying allegations and disputes, particularly over Kashmir and water rights.
During an in-depth discussion with the UN chief, the prime minister addressed India’s accusations linking Pakistan to the recent Pahalgam incident, firmly rejecting the claims. “Pakistan has informed the UN about Indian conspiracies,” said PM Shehbaz, highlighting the gravity of Indian actions and their impact on regional peace.

Sharif expressed grave concern over what he described as state-sponsored terrorism perpetrated by India in occupied Kashmir. He emphasized that the longstanding dispute over Kashmir remains the primary source of instability in South Asia, urging the UN to facilitate a just resolution in line with Security Council resolutions.
The prime minister also condemned India’s actions concerning the Indus Waters Treaty, calling them illegal and irresponsible. He stressed that the treaty is vital for the survival of 240 million people and warned that unilateral moves by India threaten the fragile balance of the region. “Pakistan will defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity with all its might,” he declared, asserting that the country is prepared to respond firmly to any provocations.
PM Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and international security, while affirming that peace cannot come at the cost of national dignity and security. “Pakistan desires peace in the region but will not remain silent in the face of any aggression,” he stated.
UN Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in promoting peace and stressed the importance of diplomatic engagement. “The world cannot afford any kind of tension in the region,” he noted, urging all involved parties to show restraint and resolve issues through dialogue.
As the situation develops, Islamabad continues its efforts to engage global institutions, seeking international support to address growing threats to regional stability and uphold its stance on Kashmir.
