Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a digital economy in Pakistan, stressing the need to transition towards a cashless economy.
Chairing a high-level meeting on Sunday, the premier expressed satisfaction with progress on the digital payments system and directed provincial chief secretaries to fully support the expansion of the Raast payment platform at the district level.
Officials briefed the meeting that under the Digital Public Infrastructure initiative, Pakistan will introduce digital IDs integrating national identity card data, biometrics, and mobile numbers. All digital transactions will be processed through these unified IDs, ensuring efficiency and transparency.
PM Shehbaz emphasized that shifting to a cashless economy was a top priority for sustainable growth, financial inclusion, and curbing the informal sector.
