PMD Forecasts More Monsoon Rain Amid Urban Flooding Warning
ISLAMABAD: As monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are expected to enter upper and central parts of the country from Tuesday night and intensify on July 19, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast additional rains in various parts of the country this week and issued a warning about urban flooding and landslides.
Under the influence of these weather systems, rain and thundershower with strong winds and isolated heavy falls are expected across Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan as well as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Kasur, Mianwali, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Sahiwal, Bahawalnagar and Okara districts of Punjab from July 18 (night) to 23 with occasional gaps.

Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Kurram, Lakki Marwat, Kohat, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Karak, and Waziristan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have all received similar forecasts.
Between July 19 (night) and July 21, with sporadic breaks, rain and thundershowers are also predicted in some areas of Balochistan, including Barkhan, Loralai, Kalat, Khuzdar, Zhob, Lasbela, Awaran, and Musakhel, as well as Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Multan, Bhakkar, Layyah, Kot Addu, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab.
On the other hand, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Dadu districts of Sindh are also anticipated to see dust storms, thunderstorms, and rain with isolated heavy showers from July 19 (evening/night) to July 23.
Dust storms, thunderstorms, and rain with a few isolated heavy falls are forecast in Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, and Karachi between July 20 and 22.
The impacts, according to the PMD, include landslides in the susceptible regions of Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as urban flooding in low-lying districts of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore.
While tourists and travellers should exercise additional caution to prevent any dangerous situations during the wet spell, farmers have been reminded to manage their activities while taking the weather forecast into account.
At the same time, as people have been advised to shelter in place during windstorms and heavy rains, powerful winds could harm flimsy structures like electric poles and solar panels. On the other hand, the concerned authorities are urged to exercise prudence and maintain vigilance.
