After the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) restored reserved seats, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) became the largest party in the Punjab Assembly, greatly increasing the party’s numerical strength in the provincial legislature.

Following the distribution of extra seats designated for women and minorities, the number of PML-N members in the Punjab Assembly has risen from 206 to 229, according to the most recent figures.

Increase in seats designated for minorities and women

The ECP’s ruling further solidified the PML-N’s representation by increasing the number of women on its reserved seats from 36 to 57. Additionally, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) increased its number of seats from three to four by gaining another seat for women.

The representation of women in the PML-Q increased from two to three, while that of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) increased from one to two.

The PML-N’s number of minority seats rose from five to seven, and the PPP also won one minority seat.

Party Position Update in the Punjab Assembly

The party positions in the 371-member Punjab Assembly are broken down as follows:

The Punjab Assembly currently has 369 out of 371 members. One seat is still unoccupied pending a by-election, while one independent member has not yet taken the oath of office despite a year having passed.

The reintroduction of reserved seats for women and minorities, which was made possible by the Supreme Court’s historic June 27 order, has also allowed the ruling alliance to formally secure a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.

The ruling coalition now controls 232 of the 333 occupied seats, far more than the 224 needed for a two-thirds majority, according to the most recent statistics published by the National Assembly Secretariat. This gives the government the ability to enact constitutional modifications without the opposition’s backing.

The PML-N becomes the biggest party

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has solidified its standing as the largest party in the National Assembly with 123 seats. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has 22 seats, followed by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which has 74 seats.

In addition to an independent member, other coalition partners include the Muslim League-Zia (1), BAP (1), National Party (1), IPP (4 seats), and PML-Q (5).

In contrast, the opposition has a total of 98 seats. Sunni Ittehad Council (80), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (10), independents supported by the PTI (5), and one representative from each of the BNP, Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), and PkMAP are included in this group.
