Karachi: according to the most recent information, the city’s police head, Mr. Khadim Hussain Rind, and the Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (ABAD) have jointly announced new intentions to establish a joint committee to take action against land grabbers and extortionists in the city. During his address to a meeting at ABAD House, he spoke these things.
Attendees included in the meeting are:
- DIGs
- Additional Police Officials
- Vice Chairman Zeeshan Siddiqui
- Patron-In-Chief Mohsin Sheikhani
- Senior Vice Chairman Ibrahim Habib
- Chairman of the ABAD Asif Sumsum
- Chairman of the Southern Region Mustafa Sheikhani
The AIGP claims that the police have taken the required actions and are attempting to completely eradicate crime from the city. The preliminary outcomes are promising. He stated that the percentage of gun-related street crimes had dropped from 2% to 1.25% over the preceding 1.5 months. But he charged that it was insufficient. It took these kinds of initiatives to eradicate street crime in Karachi and establish the city as a secure place to live.

In an effort to stop land grabs on developers’ and builders’ properties, he announced the creation of both temporary and permanent regulations. Giving details about the regulations, he said that under the short-term plan, developers and builders would complain to local SSPs, who would respond to them within a few hours. The long-term plan called for the creation of a committee comprising representatives from the Revenue Department, law enforcement, and ABAD in order to eradicate land grabbing.
He assured me that during British rule, there was one police officer for every 450 people in Karachi. However, as time has gone on, there is now only one police officer for every 4,800 residents—and that too with subpar resources and gear. He regretted that the mafias would never be allowed to operate in Karachi under the pretense of a “system” by the Sindh police.
He said that police were taking action against builders and developers in response to threats of extortion from Iran and Dubai. He also mentioned that an extortionist had just been shot and killed by authorities there, citing the death of a builder’s worker as inspiration. Police station reforms are desperately needed, according to Mr. Mohsin Sheikhani, the Patron-in-Chief of ABAD and a former chairman, who made this statement during the event. For whatever reason, the SHO of the impacted area would consistently appear at the construction site.
He made it very evident that the Home Minister and Commissioner Karachi were working to form a committee to address the pressing need for model police stations in Karachi. Even though ABAD members were working diligently on construction projects all over Pakistan, he said that more than half of the projects had to be put on hold due to the current economic downturn.
In spite of their limited resources, Mr. Asif Sumsum, Chairman of ABAD, thanked the Karachi police for their proactive efforts in protecting developers and builders from land grabs and extortion. In his address to the group, he did add, though, that the police are still capable of doing more, such as removing the threat. He insisted that all SOPs decided upon in a meeting with DIGs be appropriately implemented in order to protect developers and builders.
